Trichomoniasis Testing in Singapore: Trichomoniasis, or “trich,” is a sexually transmitted infection that may cause itching and discharge, or may not cause symptoms. It can be easily treated.
Trichomoniasis is usually diagnosed by a swab test. Some of the discharge from the vagina or penis is collected on a swab and sent to the laboratory. The less expensive version of the test involves looking at the discharge under a microscope to see if the parasites are present; however, this test may miss 30-40% of cases, because the sample might have missed including the parasites. More expensive tests are used that test for the DNA (genetic material) of the parasites. These tests are less likely to miss the infection. Some clinics use the cheaper test first, and then use the more expensive test only if the first test is negative.
Trichomoniasis is not included in standard screening for sexually transmitted infections. Testing for this disease is only done if there are symptoms.
